Photography: Snowy Owl

Tyson Elder January 10, 2022

When I look back at my life through the lens of a camera eye and as a photographer it is clear to me that you need to shoot what you love. Whether that's concerts, birds, landscapes, your kids, families, weddings or dogs. You need to be passionate about what you do.

Quite often I'm asked how I got into music and concert photography. It's sort of a tricky question to answer but it was certainly a journey that I'm willing to explore. When I look back at how I started taking pictures and where I am at now it took not only hard work but a lot of learning what I didn't want to do. As a young (amateur/hobbyist) photographer you build your skills trying out different situations and genres of photography. There is a lot of things to take pictures of.

At many points in my life I've dreamed of being a Nat Geo photographer traveling the world documenting its beautiful landscapes, stunning animals and humanity in all situations.

Recently there has been a Snowy Owl (bubo scandiacus) hanging around my neighbourhood outside of Victoria, British Columbia. While the snowy owl is a nomadic bird it is pretty rare for one to hang around these parts.

It's actually been kind of fun for everyone in our area to chat about where they've seen the bird and the hoards of bird photographers setting up camp to catch a glimpse of the elusive bird. I rarely have gear envy but these bird and nature photographers have some serious kits.

On the two occasions I've had the chance to get some photos of the owl. I never imagined I'd be climbing up a ladder on my parent's deck to get a shot of a bird on their neighbour's roof.

I'll leave the serious birding to Shayne Kaye. He's one seriously good nature photographer and friend.
