I laid in bed skimming over the abundance of text messages sent from people I haven't talked to in a better part of a year wishing me a “Happy New Year!” until I found one that felt most appropriate.
All it said was “Brunch?”
Fast forward about four hours later and I'm already two hours late to meet Shayne Kaye for some New Year's Day photo adventuring. He doesn't seem to mind, but I seriously hate being late. It's a huge pet-peeve of mine when people all late. To me it's a sign of disrespect. If you can't respect someone enough to show up on time it's like spitting in their face.
Shayne hardly took notice. He had a coffee and he'd been shooting some Brown Pelicans that had taken up roosting in the Fisherman's Wharf area of Victoria. A rare sight in our neck of the woods. Our climate is a little too cold for them to make their way up here. They are more suited to California (but who isn't?). Later in the day two girls from a wildlife rescue outfit would throw blankets over a shivering pelican and whisk it off to a sanctuary before it is relocated.
I'm a bad local.
I've lived in the Greater Victoria Area for roughly twelve years, and I've barely been to any tourist attractions. I've driven or walked by most of them, but I've never paid much attention to them. I've been more focused on record stores, coffee shops, concerts, and other hipster areas. It also doesn't help that a majority of my friends grew up here so all these places. Having been to Miniature World a hundred times on field trips in primary school.
This was my first time at Fisherman's Wharf. I got the full tour of docked house boats, closed restaurants (it was a holiday), and tourists feeding seals. The later I shot a little video of with my new GoPro Hero2. It's strange to think I'd never been here before. Tourist trap, yes. I'd done all sorts of things in the neighbourhood over the years including some work across the street at a workplace safety equipment store.
It turned into a wonderful day of shooting pelicans, seals, and fishing boats. Something I would have never done if I wasn't two hours late to meet a friend.
