Before heading off to Europe in 2007 I picked up Spirit of the West’s greatest hit compilation “Hit Parade” on a whim. I had no idea that it would undoubtedly become one of those records that are filed under the soundtrack of your life.
I knew a couple of their songs, but not much. Just the radio singles, and that was fine with me. It was songs like “Canadian Skye” that got me through a bought of homesickness or staring out a window of a train for hours.
Since coming home from my little backpacking trip I’ve seen Spirit of the West a handful of times (back to back nights on a St. Paddy’s weekend) and John Mann do a few local house shows. They always put on a great show, and in most of the venues I’ve seen them the floor bounces quite a lot during “Home For A Rest.” Drinking songs on frosh compilations will do that.
Seeing Spirit of the West really reminded me of my days abroad and made wish I was still out there travelling the globe. It’s amazing that music can trigger memories you’d thought you lost.
One day I’ll be able to hit the road again with just my backpack, camera, and Spirit of the West loaded onto my ipod.
