Concert Review: Arkells.

Unknown Source. The Arkells aren't an opening band.

Tonight is no exception. Within minutes the Arkells have an unrivalled power to control the stage and crowd. It would almost make you think fellow Ontario indie rockers Tokyo Police Club was opening for them. It seems bold to say this band you may not have heard of deserves to be the headliner but let me assure you this isn't a grandiose statement. In recent years I've seen the Arkells several times each time putting the headliner they are opening for to shame. I'm sure it has something to do with the fact they have no shortage of catchy rock hits as well as a swagger and command of a well seasoned travelling band.

I've recently heard that the Arkells are Canada's youthful and more energetic answer to the Hold Steady.I'd have to agree both create anthems for a generation and a time. In 10 years we will look back at the music that defined a period this era of Canadian rock music and the Arkells will be at the top of the list. Much like the Hold Steady has done for current American rock music.

The Arkells ended their set by calling all the members of Tokyo Police Club out on stage to help them perform a  few songs. First a cover of Bruce Springsteen's 1984 classing "Dancing in The Dark" which was complete with saxophone solo. At points you could barely hear the band over the crowd singing along. Still joined by Tokyo Police Club and now their board operator the last song of the night was their most recent single off of 2008's Jackson Square, "John Lennon." A fitting way to end the show with what would be John Lennon's 70th birthday roughly a week away.

The Arkells left the stage with the crowd wanting more and that seems to be the way with all solid rock and roll performers. If would highly recommend if you ever get the chance to catch the Arkells perform live drop everything you are doing and go see them live. I have no doubts that this Hamilton, Ontario based band could be the next big thing to come out of Canada.
